Venice. Elegant old "queen of the sea", sitting with toes just above the water. She always loved a good party. Carnival became an offical holiday in 1296 and survived through the centuries until 1797. After being suppressed for nearly 200 years by conquerors and then by Italy's fascist regime, Carnival was revived as a festival and a tourist attraction in the 1980's. Carnival takes place for two weeks prior to the beginning of Lent, usually in February. Carnival in Venice, which recreates the pageantry of the past, is unlike any other int he world.
